"My work as an artist in the folk art
tradition," writes Sister Karlyn, " has been to paint
originals in the delicate borders, the heart emblems, trees of life and
scripted messages. The art serves a spiritual need today and
informs the public of a highly decorative art produced by the Society
of the Believers (Shakers) for a limited period."
A visit to Pleasant Hill, Kentucky and the Shaker
Museum located there, began Sister's interest in the art form of the
Shakers. Several visits with the current members of the Shakers
in Sabbathday Lake, Maine, have deepened her interest and inspired her
to renew their art and other folk art forms through watercolors and
scripted messages.
